Understanding Depression

Depression or major depressive disorder affects your thinking, feelings, and behaviors. Depression includes sadness and a loss of interest in things you previously enjoyed. The effects of depression can decrease your functionality at home and work. Symptoms can be mild to severe, including:
  • A low, sad, or depressed mood.
  • Loss of interest.
  • Appetite changes.
  • Problems with sleeping too little or too much.
  • Fatigue and low energy levels.
  • Engaging in purposeless activities like pacing.
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness.
  • Hopelessness.
  • Brain fog or problems with concentration.
  • Thoughts of suicide or death.
It’s estimated one in 15 adults will experience depression in a given year, and one in six will experience it at some point in their lives. Depression is one, however, of the most treatable psychiatric disorders, with 80-90% of people responding well to treatment. Nearly everyone who receives treatment will experience at least some level of relief. A combination approach is often helpful in treating depression. This can include:
  • Medication
  • Talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy,
  • Self-help and coping

Holistic Therapies to Help You Overcome Depression

Depression is a complex, chronic disease, but it’s also one that’s treatable and manageable with the right approach. At Midwest Recovery Centers, our depression treatment programs are structured and rely on scientific research and evidence. Still, at the same time, the human element of compassion and understanding is present. When someone comes to us for depression treatment, we take into consideration many factors to create a plan for them. These include:
  • The presenting problem
  • Physical and mental symptoms
  • The degree of psychological distress
  • Support system
  • Belief system
We offer integrated mental health treatment, meaning you work with a team of professionals across disciplines for the best outcomes in your specific situation. Our integrated healthcare plans can include some or all of the following approaches:
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Somatic Experiencing (SE)
  • Spiritual psychology
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Psychoeducational groups
  • Experiential groups
  • Yoga
  • Mindfulness
  • Progress groups
  • Art therapy
  • Light therapy
  • Creative writing
Our team will monitor and treat your physical health and medication needs as well and may also decide to include the following in your treatment plan:
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive therapy using short magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain associated with depressive disorders.
  • Light therapy is a viable treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder and postpartum depression.
  • Exercise, nutrition, and gut health programs.
  • Medication management using pharmacogenomics or PGx testing to determine how you might respond to a particular medication.

How Does Depression Treatment Work at Midwest Recovery Centers?

We offer a unique 45-day residential treatment program. You work with your therapist intensively in the beginning. Then, you step down into lower levels of care as you’re ready. During your 45-day program, you receive intensive therapy, medication management, and self-care strategies. Our treatment professionals use modalities incorporating traditional, naturopathic, and holistic approaches.

We don’t just treat your symptoms—we holistically treat you as a multifaceted person.

Our Residential Mental Health Program is designed carefully to provide a place that’s nurturing and safe so you get the support you need as you learn to manage stressors and triggers impacting your mental health.

While our holistic, intensive depression treatment program ends at 45 days, we offer ongoing support, and our therapists and case managers will connect you with guidance and resources.
